about
This melody is from 'Fields' by Pulse Modulators, London (Memimo Media, London.
The slow electronic theme inspired me to put words to it as a tribute to the WW1 soldiers and families who lost or who came through that great war. It recalls some of the great battle names and coming from Ulster the Thiepval Wood is where many Irish and Ulster men died, or were wounded. Even the drums at the end remind me of what it was to have to go into machine gun fire. The allies and the Germans both wept after this war, so its also a lament. The violet's blue, I hope give hope..were they there as well as the poppies?
See the poppies in the fields,
See the leaves, flow in the breeze,
See the petals fall in size,
They don’t have to be disguised.
Oh a hundred years ago,
Men fell here, long in their woes.
Flanders fields and Paschendale,
Down they went, down they fell.
And on the Vimy Ridge they died
And found no bridge of hope alive,
And mothers cried and girlfriends too,
And villages and hamlets knew.
A little bunch of violets blue,
Thiepval Wood, standing few,
Until the Somme took them all out
Along with men, of redoubt.
# No mans land, no mans war,
No mans bridge, but despair,
No mans hope, No mans faith,
No mans place, but there in death.
Men from Empires all around
Men from Fatherland’s hit ground
Down the rich and down the poor,
Lords and Lairds and Paupers, all.
Out came Pals versus Saxony might
All to fall in days and nights,
Sons and dads and little boys
All the same, political toys.
Sad they’re gone, never did grow old,
Where they returned to the fold?
We shall ne’er forget the few
Who lived a hundred years and knew.
But for now the poppies grow,
Yes, all the men, had to go,
See the fields of red and blue-
Kings and Kaisers, President’s men.
# No mans land, no mans war,
No mans bridge, but despair,
No mans hope, No mans faith,
No mans place, but there in death.
A little bunch of violets blue,
In Thiepval Wood, there were but a few,
Until the Somme took them all out
Along with men, of redoubt.....
And mothers cried and girlfriends too,
And villages and hamlets knew. Samuel Irwin (c) 2016
